RIDER Grabs victory in texas but sustains multiple injuries in the process.

The team:

-Mark Blackman , First cowhand MJB ranch, specializes in buy low- sell even lower

-Mason Regan , specialty: getting machines to talk to each other,eating mexican food and semi truck re-hab

-Brandon Blackman, specializes in sleeping and following orders,also he is so green he won’t run air in his tires.

-Matt K , specializes in disrupting the laws of inertia,supporting BRP products and in “helping me to learn how to help him”

-and Me ,Roberto Arano , specializing in describing what people are specialists at

had my first race of the season in an elevated ” class”. Won C class in my age bracket last year so this year I have to compete in B class. B class has longer tougher courses and of course longer tougher competitors, lol.

The Colorado team piled in the “new for us” semi truck converted to motorhome .Ex Fed-Ex semi trailer on the back for 5 race bikes + one spare.”Dude’s this trailer is tough , i bet it could crush fast food dumpsters as if they were soda cans” , said Captain Blackman. (Foreshadowing that which shan’t be spoken of again) .Tanks holds $600 dollars worth of diesel. wait…for it…update: $629 worth of diesel.

Captain Mark Blackman commanded “engage” and we all headed down to texas with the team to Compete in the Caprock Canyon off road motorcycle race.

It was the first race of the season for us because we missed the Arizona double header due to a massive snow storm between us and it.

My thoughts for this year was develop the motorbike and get in shape as it will probably be pretty tough to win the series or even win a single event since I have just moved in to a tougher class. Also Texas is known for some fast boys and this is their home event.

Then again the caprock event is one of my favorites of the year because the dirt is awesome and it’s all cornering.Very few straights. Also I have a new bike that is pretty much perfect for this kind of event.

“I have set the bike up very aggressively because I know this event is all about cornering and I rely on my BRP stabilizer setup to take care of high speed stability. Without the stabilizer it would be more of a compromise towards stability with less cornering ability.BRP RAWKS!!! [hawaii surfer hand gesture]

I am also testing a super-secret anti stall clutch which saved me a couple of times and now that I think about it without it I would probably have finished 2 places lower.

Well I got a good starting position (6th row/425 riders!). There are 4 of us on our row : One A rider, Me a B rider, One younger C rider (the A riders son) and an older rider in Sportsman class. We all have our usual meeting and we decide that the A rider can take off first , The 20 something C rider can go as long as he let’s me by if I catch him and then the sportsman rider. We all agree to re-arrange as necessary after we get a feel for each others speed.

We line up and the flag drops I wait a split sec and then go after the 20 year old. At the first turn I can tell I’m faster and I put my wheel into him for a few corners and then he let’s me by. So after the first mickey mouse stage. We agree that I will leave right after the A rider.

On the first real stage I take off on the back of the A rider and I am right on his pace, but it is dusty, much dustier than last year and the dust slows me down.

The trail is awesome at times it is a sinuous ribbon of mellow-bermed dirt richness unwinding into the horizon ,apexs defined by Yucca and mesquite. You learn: Mesquite don’t give (even 1” branches), evergreen shrubs do give. Pear-type cactus you can drive right over, just don’t fall in it or try to get traction on it. Bags of aloe with spikes on the oustide.

From there on out I catch about 2 people per stage and the 2nd place winner overall passes me on the longer stages (he’s an ISDE medalist/our olympics) so I can’t complain!

Throughout the day I’m half tempted to holeshot the start and get in front of the A rider to avoid the dust, but I just decide to live with it…..as it’s to early in the season to sweat it just yet. If I was in a known points battle It would change things, but this being the first race I have no idea where I’m at yet.

I’m riding “well”, I would not say “on fire”…but the dust……

There was one really long stage without too much rhythm that I keep overshooting turns on and going through trees etc, either because my brake hand is too numb and/or the dirt is drying out and getting very silty.But that was the only stage where I made many lame mistakes.

Well at the end of it all it turns out I won 1st place (27 class competitiors) ! The spread between 1st and 3rd was only 22 seconds! This is over a 90 mile(butt-hurting) course, about 65 miles of actual race mileage, 22 seconds that’s about what one fall can cost or maybe 5 mis-read corners! Wow not much breathing room there.

Moral of the story : Pretend you are always one second behind winning! Even when the whole thing is almost over FOCUS FOCUS FOCUS,but ride loosey-goosey!

We had a great time ,the crew is an interesting mix and age range. The only downside of all this is maybe I will get in a season points battle, which takes more prep time etc.

Oh yeah and the two injuries:

- blister from getting caught in the folding ramp

-what do i have ? -a problem with strained tendons etc so what do I do:

acquire some sort of elbow tendon strain from being curious enough to arm wrestle Brandon Blackman the 17 year old. Last time I tried this maybe 10 years ago (different teenager) I ended up “winning” but pulled my neck muscles baaaaad. Why did I do it…curiosity…….jeez I think i’ve finally learned…..o yeah Brandon managed to race and beat many people with a flat rear tire, the entire race (Yami 250F), the tire was not even unseated I don’t think! Kenda trakmaster tire.

EDIT: it turns out Mike Vassily (2nd place) was actually a DNF (his times were a scorecard mistake) and so Kevin Harris moved up to 2nd place..
